The Neely Family

Mary Neely had eight children: Hannah, William, Mary, John, Solomon, David, Elizabeth, and George (III). She outlived all of her children except George.

Since Songbirds are Free was published in 2007, I have heard from many Mary Neely Spears descendents. Several of them have been gracious enough to provide pictures and information for this web site and the second book chronicling the lives of the Neely family, River Passage, released in the fall of 2009.

One descendent, Dianna Kemp Ewald, provided this picture of Mary's great-granddaughter, Leatha Spears, shown on her wedding day with her husband, James Hiram Massie in 1892.

Leatha was the granddaughter of Mary's youngest son, George Spears III. Her father was George's son Henry.

Physical characteristics of the Neely family seemed to have been handed down through the generations. Below is a picture of Dianna Kemp Ewald, who is a 4th generation grandchild of Mary Neely, at the age of 17. Beside her picture is the regression of Mary Neely at the age of 19 made by forensics expert Barbara Condrey.

Many thanks to Dianna for her permission to display her photograph here!
